Rice's Annapolis: The Palestinian State issue

I recently read an article on the Annapolis event that Condoleezza Rice is trying to schedule and was dismayed at what seems to be the goals. A quick google search on Annapolis and Rice will yield several angles what's being done, and an especially in depth look at what effort Rice is putting into the event can be read at Haaretz.com .

To summarize, Palestinians have continued to desire a real political state in the middle east, and so Israel's government has struggled to keep the Palestinian Nation at bay while they try to figure out what to do with them. This story is ancient history (quite literally), but now Rice is trying to force a real solid motion to occur. This is every bit as abrasive, difficult, and touchy as it sounds. She wants major Arab leaders, Egypt, Israel, and Palestinian representatives to meet in Annapolis, Maryland and polish up some sort of plan for peace.

Israel still wants to believe that giving Palestinians land will help things out, and it really does sound sensible. Tensions would fall if refugees could be moved from surrounding areas and ease the economies and societies of Jordan as well as other Arab nations. Indeed, a lot of what harbors terrorists are these populations of disgruntled and forgotten people. But the history is what Rice must fight.

The PLO, or Palestine Liberation Organization, has in its own agenda the utter destruction of Israel. As if that isn't a difficult demand to resolve peaceably, the Israeli government is still heavily divided in what should be given to supply some sort of support for the Palestinians (particularly where Jerusalem is involved...). The hopes are that they can finally give terrorists less to work with by throwing 'responsibility' and 'identity' at these camps of refugees.

My continual disruption with this is why must a small country like Israel give up land by itself? I must reiterate that originally around when Israel became a state again, Palestine refused to accept the UN's resolution for dividing what is now Israel into Jewish and Palestinian halves. You can wikipedia this and google it up too, as the way things are now began from a very twisted set of events where Israel tries to be nice, Palestine crosses "the line", Israel opens a can, and the cycle continues.

While my resolution admittedly sounds terrible, I think that the Palestinians should just divide up, choose some ethnicities, and settle around. At this day and age, you mess with borders at your own peril. Life is life, and land is land. If you get jobs and earn your identity, you'll be able to afford to move in and gradually create a presence. If you want to take a short cut and just say "give me land" even if it is yours, you'll be fooling yourselves thinking that you'll have the organization to rule over anything at all within a couple day's notice.

The Palestinian people have shown time and time again that they simply don't have the capacity to organize as a nation, or they'd have been all over what Rice is doing for them. It's almost like their bitterness has eaten their minds over. More so, Israel shows the opposite... a people who indeed took the time to get themselves organized and lived life and earned their place in this world. It's hard, for sure, but it looks like what Rice would rather do will end up sinking a ship that needs to just dry-dock for a while.
