In a sad turn of events, Albanian voter turnout was very low in the recent election for the leaders who will declare the independent state of Kosovo. According to the reuter's article, the independence of Kosovo has done little to advance the state of affairs there. The people still suffer severe economic woes.
What seems to be the case is another place in dire need of aid and yet those who should be responsible are not doing a thing to help out. It's tragic to see Serbia resenting Kosovo in a manner that can only be likened to what happened to Rwanda. Majorities. Minorities. War. Upheaval. And yet we again see such suffering in the end when there should be peace. In the case of Rwanda, it is staggering to look at how clearly violence escalates when people merely don't have enough food or work. Creating both should be a very direct and simple route of action, but looking at the number of times this has happened in other countries, it's difficult to speculate so optimistically. It's worked before that after a country is torn that it will repair, but in the case of Albania, Serbia, and Kosovo, it seems like the world has just lost interest in the whole thing. It's without question that most countries have the wealth enough to take a small country like Kosovo and turn up enough help to really make a difference, and depression only lasts for as long as Kosovo and its people feel like everyone has forgotten about them.
But, does anyone even remember the crisis of Serbia and the 'ethnic cleansings' ? Wasn't it just a wash of media coverage that made us all feel terrible and made a great story for news? If this truly has happened to so many countries by now, and consistently we've seen the world rather avoid the sadness when it comes to war, but looking at the incredible efforts for much bigger problems like the Tsunami that hit several countries on the western ring of the Indian Ocean, it's surprising. Is it such a huge leap to think we can't do anything about it? You can't say it won't help. It's a valuable investment. When the US practically gave money to Germany to rebuild after WWII, it was clear that the boost in the global market nearly gave us back every penny after a while. Kosovo could essentially become just as a much a help as it is a thorn in the side of Serbia. It's one of those things that takes time indeed... but perhaps someone fell asleep here, because I've seen a lot bigger conflicts (going back to WW2 again) get thrown out the window when people were dead set of putting things back in order. Kosovo's biggest enemy, then, isn't the serbian's that hate them, but all the people who really are neutral about the whole scenario.
Lots of aid has gone into Kosovo, indeed. And yet a lot of the weight has been on Yugoslavia and other places around Kosovo. Looking at the economy's severe dip and the recent violence even after the wars and independence, it almost appears as though it's a lost cause. But looking to in the past, large grants of money have turned such war torn places into better or worse scenarios. I want to believe that the UN will do something about this and not just let the people and their economy rot anymore, but this looks like something will go down in history books all the same. No one cared, and so it stayed the same.
